iPad tethering

Want to use your iPad on the road with your iPhone’s internet connection? Jailbreak!

On the iPad:
Turn off Bluetooth, Wireless
Install iTether from Cydia (sits in the Big Boss repo if you can’t find it)

On the iPhone
Settings -> Network -> Turn on Internet Tethering
Turn on Bluetooth

On the iPad:
open iTether
should see an option to turn the daemon ON, do this
you should your iPhone pop-up. Tap to connect

Your iPad will attempt to connect via BT to the iPhone and receive an IP address.
Open up safari and head to www.whatismyip.com and you should get an address that is associated with your phone’s network provider.

Make sure you turn off Bluetooth and WIFI on the iPad. I believe iTether uses its own BT stack or something similar to connect, so the bluetooth on/off functionality is called within iTether.

With most of the counting done, ABC’s calling it 73 seats for LNP, and 72 seats for Labor. I’m going to ignore whatever’s The Australian and the SMH (and the other networks) are calling it, Antony Green’s the man to go to.

That leaves 1 Greens seat, and 4 independents. We’ll assume that the Greens will hold their word and side with Labor for 73/73. The magic number is 76, so either way, both parties will need to convince at least 3/4 of the independents to side with them.

Whilst the Coalition can claim they now have the higher number of seats, and a higher primary vote, ALP has its advantage of being the incumbent. Arguably JG is in a better position from the Govt to negotiate with indepedents, and she positively looks more Prime Ministerial when she gets to call her press conferences from the PM office. Oakeshott, Katter and Windsor all seem to have policies that are more inline with ALP’s, especially on the NBN. However it’ll be political suicide for these ex-National independents to side with Labor.

Things get more complicated in the Senate, where from July 2011, the Greens control the balance of power. This could be a problem should a minority Coalition government take place. Fielding’s threat earlier this week to ‘block supply’ (that is turn back budget bills) appears to be also nullified on July 1.

Recent developments, including Abbott agreeing to have his budget submitted to the Treasury for costing, and a NewsPoll indicating voters in the independents seats prefer Abbott forming Government, may have put the punters in favor of the Coalition. Centrebet is giving the Coalition $1.40, vs ALP’s $2.85. Earlier in the week it was neck and neck at $1.85 each.

There’s an Abbott press conference at 12.15pm today, JG press conference yesterday. She basically said ‘it’s going to take some time’. Reiterated no change to mining policy. Her govt will be caretaker mode until a new government is decided.

As of this morning, Centrebet’s odds on forming a minority government:

1.66 ALP
2.12 COALITION

According to the ABC, it looks like it’s still set for a 73/73 tie, but the independents that appeared last night on the 7.30 Report and Q&A seem to be suggesting they will lean towards the ALP’s NBN and climate change policies.

With Fox News entrenched on the right, and MSNBC firmly in the left, this NYTimes editorial advocates, to some extent Jon Stewart’s ‘middle-of-the-road’ journalism, a void CNN has tried to fill in the last few years. Conversely, Stewart himself covered CNN’s inability to sit in the middle with his own segment last week. The clip with Blitzer and Snoop Dogg is hilarious.

It all of course, comes back to Stewart’s infamous Crossfire segment back in 2004.

Jailbreaking an iphone 3g with no sim

assumptions: iphone 3g (not 3gs).
unable to determine current firmware on phone.
unable to determine which carrier phone is locked to
phone is in ‘emergency calls only’ state, and is locked to unknown carrier
using Windows XP (should work on Vista)

must have:
redsn0w
iphone 3.0 firmware (.ipsw file)

put it into DFU mode – not this step is possibly crucial to unlocking it when no SIM is available
should appear in windows as usb device
open itunes 8.2
restore iphone os 3.0 to it – use shift-restore and select the downloaded IPSW, or if you are certain

the firmware already matches what redsn0w supports, just let it download the default update from itunes

download redsn0w + iphone firmware that MATCHES what you just downloaded

redsn0w – open and browse to ipsw
redsn0w will patch ipsw
put iphone into DFU again (follow prompts)
redsnow will upload patched ipsw
after a few restarts iphone should load up hacked firmware and launch into springboard
it should show ‘insert sim’

connect to wireless network
open cydia
enter in URL for ultrasn0w in sources

install ultrasn0w
status window should say complete
reboot phone
insert any known working SIM

test by calling & SMSing

Manual Competence

Matthew Crawford appeared on the Colbert Report (24-6-09) last week. His book, “Shop Class as Soulcraft” explores the difference between manual labor (mechanics, plumbers) and knowledge work (office jobs), and the growing disdain for the trades industry in today’s world. Matthew himself runs a motorcycle workshop and has a PhD in political philosophy.

What struck me in the interview was this line from Crawford – “We impoverish ourselves intellectually when we devalue manual competence”.

I think sparkies are smarter than my fellow white-collar workers think.

Interview here however I don’t think it’s viewable outside the US.

Here’s a few zingers from the left. What’s the common theme? A naive/stupid-sounding Republican questions a senior member of the Obama administration (and in Gore’s case, a former Vice President) as part of a committee hearing.

Steven Chu (Secretary of Energy) is asked – “How did the oil get underneath Alaska?” 6 seconds to respond. The Representative from Texas simplifies it to ‘..so it just drifted there’.

Hillary Clinton (Secretary of State) is quizzed by Representative Pence (Indiana) on Obama’s meeting with Hugo Chavez, president of Venezuela.

Al Gore is asked if his advocacy for climate change over the last 30 years was done all for personal financial interest. Congresswoman Blackburn doesn’t seem to get it.
